Queen Victoria opening the National Rifle Association Competition - July 1860

In Victoria's reign Wimbledon Common was the venue for the largest rifle shooting contest in the kingdom. Thousands of people came to compete and watch. Tents and marquees were set up to provide accommodation and catering. A horse-drawn tramway ran along the Common to transport people from one part of the huge site to another. We have many mementos and illustrations from this period.
