Oral history library

The exhibits in the museum, described on this website, are testaments to the lives led by local people over many hundreds of years. Through these items, supported by contemporary documents and interpreted by our imagination, we can begin to understand our social history. Yet so much more has been lost because it was never written down.

On the other hand, Britain has a great tradition of oral history - stories and facts passed on verbally from one generation to another. With the help of modern technology the museum has begun to build an oral history library - capturing the recollections and reminiscences of senior Wimbledon residents. In this section you will be able to hear their accounts of life in an earlier age first hand and there are written transcripts too to enrich your understanding.

We hope you enjoy stepping back into the past with our contributors.
