Artefacts collection online

artefactsThe Artefacts collection can best be summed up as the 'social history' or 'community history' collection. It comprises around 300 items, mostly from the period 1850-1980, of which about half are on permanent display in the themed cases within the museum.

Most of the 'things' you see in the museum which do not fall into the other collection categories will probably be in artefacts. As such, it is an extremely diverse and exciting array of local material.

Description: Mug, bone china, commemorating the centenary of King’s College School in Wimbledon 1897-1997. Gilt lining around rim, base and back of handle. On-glaze decorative printed body in red, blue and black. Inscribed ‘CENTENARY IN WIMBLEDON 1897 (100 YEARS) KING’S COLLEGE SCHOOL 1997’. Smaller inscription around base of body, ‘KING’S COLLEGE SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED AS PART OF KING’S COLLEGE IN THE STRAND LONDON IN 1829’. Central design of school coat of arms. Inscription stamp on base in black ink: (Crown) above ROYAL CROWN DUCHY FINE BONE CHINA ENGLAND , encircled by laurel swags and ‘GUILD OF ENGLISH MASTER POTTERS’. Description: Mug, commemorating the centenary of the Wimbledon & Putney Commons Act 1871 - 1971. Inscribed around the outside beneath the rim, 'WIMBLEDON & PUTNEY COMMONS ACT 1871-1971, on-glaze black ink printing, beneath which is a graphic by David Knight around the body depicting a National Rifle Association scene with riflemen, the Windmill and Manor Cottage, in 1871.
